A test socket is an IC socket used to measure the electrical characteristics of semiconductor devices and verify that they meet the required specifications. Depending on the application, test sockets can generally be divided into two categories:
Sockets for functional testing in mass-production lines, used during the post-processing stage of semiconductor manufacturing;
Sockets for characteristic evaluation in the development stage, used for assessing the performance of first-article or prototype devices.
In contrast, a burn-in socket is designed for long-duration accelerated testing under powered conditions to evaluate product durability and reliability. Its purpose differs significantly from that of a test socket. Because burn-in sockets must withstand high-temperature environments, they are typically soldered directly onto the board and are not easily replaceable. Test sockets, on the other hand, are used throughout the mass-production process and are usually mounted to the board via surface-mount methods or secured with screws, making them easier to maintain and replace.
